Innovating your business: the Impact of 3D printing

Additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing (3DP) is a revolutionary emerging technology that could up-end the last two centuries of approaches to design and manufacturing with profound geopolitical, economic, social, demographic, environmental, and security implications. It is significantly different from the existing “subtractive” manufacturing technologies, as which creates objects from the bottom-up by adding material one cross-sectional layer at a time. This characteristic of AM or 3DP is indeed leading to profound changes in every aspect of business, such as (1) product development; (2) business organisation design; and (3) business ecosystem configuration. Corresponding to this challenge, we aim to develop understandings on the innovations brought by the adoption of AM or 3DP to business. Based on these understandings, we further aim to fundamentally re-think the way to manage product development, business organisation design, and business ecosystem configuration, since the existing management theories might be no longer suitable in the new context when AM or 3DP is adopted.
